Build the Rig Around the Method

Leaders and Main Line
Line and leader choice must provide enough abrasion resistance and strength for the swim and tackle. Check for damage after contact with structure and after every fish rather than assuming heavy tackle is indestructible.
Hooks
Use strong hooks appropriate to the rig and bait. Hook points should be checked regularly. A heavy-duty hook with a damaged point is still a damaged hook, merely with better marketing.
Rig Length and Presentation
Rig length and bait position should suit the bottom, flow and method. The aim is for the bait and hook arrangement to fish cleanly without tangles or obvious mechanical problems.
Line Angles and Rod Position
The rig does not operate in isolation. Rod position, line angle, current and how the bait is placed all affect the complete setup. This is one reason local guidance is useful on large unfamiliar water.
Check Every Connection
- Inspect knots and crimps.
- Check abrasion points.
- Test hooks and swivels.
- Replace damaged components rather than hoping optimism has a breaking strain.
- Make sure the rig matches the rod, reel and main line.
