Caspe Fishing Holidays: The Complete Guide to Fishing in Spain's Freshwater Capital

Why Caspe Is Europe's Freshwater Fishing Capital

There are good fishing destinations in Europe. Then there is Caspe.

Situated on the banks of the River Ebro in the Aragón region of northeastern Spain, Caspe sits at the heart of the most productive catfishing stretch in Europe. The river here is wide, deep, and rich — home to Wels catfish that have been growing, largely undisturbed, for over fifty years.

For UK anglers who want catfishing in Spain, Caspe is the destination. Not because it's the only option — but because it consistently produces the biggest fish, the most reliable sport, and the best experience.

The River Ebro at Caspe

The Ebro at Caspe has a character all of its own. The river widens considerably through this stretch, creating a mix of deep main channels, slower-moving margins, and sunken structure that gives large catfish exactly what they need: depth, food, and cover.

The stretch is less commercially fished than the Mequinenza section downstream, meaning less pressure on the fish and more natural behaviour. Catfish here are bold, well-fed, and resident — your guide knows where they are and how to get them feeding.

The surrounding landscape adds to the experience. The Ebro valley around Caspe is dramatic — ochre cliffs, olive groves, and wide blue skies that feel a world away from the UK. Most guests comment that the setting alone is worth the trip.

What You Can Catch at Caspe

Wels catfish: The main event. Fish over 100lb are common on guided trips from Caspe. The stretch holds a healthy population of large fish and your guide has spent years learning their behaviour and location. For a complete guide to the species, read our Wels catfishing guide.

Carp: The Caspe stretch holds excellent carp, regularly running 30–50lb. These are wild river fish — not stocked — and they fight considerably harder than their stillwater UK counterparts. See our carp fishing in Spain guide for more.

Zander: An underrated target on the Caspe stretch, particularly in autumn and winter. The Ebro's zander regularly exceed 8–10lb — considerably larger than most UK specimens.

Black bass and perch: Both present on the stretch and good sport on light lure gear during downtime between catfish sessions.

Our Riverside Accommodation

Caspe Fishing's cabins sit steps from the River Ebro. You can see the water from your door.

The cabins are clean, comfortable, and set up for anglers — not luxury hotel guests. Proper beds, hot showers, a functioning kitchen, and everything you need to relax after a day on the bank. A fully stocked bar area in the forecourt is the natural end to every fishing day.

2-bedroom cabin: Sleeps 3 (plus sofa bed), ideal for small groups or couples 3-bedroom cabin: Sleeps 6, the most popular option for groups of 4–6

Both cabins are available as part of guided packages or as standalone cabin-only bookings for self-guided anglers.
