Why Autumn Rivals Spring as the Best Time on the Ebro
Ask experienced Ebro guides which month they'd choose if they could fish only once a year, and October comes up almost as often as April or May.
Autumn on the River Ebro is the season's second peak — and for many anglers who've fished both, it edges ahead of spring. The reasons are specific and worth understanding before you book.
This is the complete guide to autumn fishing on the River Ebro for UK anglers, covering catfishing in Spain, carp, zander, and everything in between.
Why Autumn Is Exceptional on the Ebro
Post-summer feeding frenzy: Wels catfish and carp that have been relatively inactive through the hottest part of summer come back on the feed hard in September and October. Wels catfish feeding behaviour intensifies in autumn as fish build fat reserves before winter. The result is aggressive, confident feeding that produces high catch rates.
Temperature sweet spot: After the brutal summer heat, September and October bring the Ebro back to its most comfortable fishing conditions. Daytime temperatures of 22–28°C in September, dropping to 15–20°C in October. Cool mornings and evenings that make all-day sessions genuinely pleasant.
Lower pressure than spring: Spring on the Ebro is increasingly popular and the better-known stretches can get busy in April and May. Autumn sees noticeably fewer visiting anglers — meaning better availability of prime spots and a more relaxed experience.
Zander come alive: Autumn is the start of prime zander season on the Ebro. As temperatures drop, zander switch into aggressive feeding mode and fishing quality improves dramatically through October and November.
Stable river conditions: Autumn typically brings stable water levels on the Ebro — neither the occasional winter flooding nor the very low summer flows. Consistent conditions make the fishing more predictable.
Month by Month: September, October, November
September — The Transition Early September can still feel like summer — warm days, high temperatures. But by mid-September the change is noticeable. Water temperatures drop from summer highs into the low 20s°C and catfish feeding picks up noticeably. September is an excellent month — arguably better than most of summer — with the added bonus of comfortable evenings on the bank.
Zander start showing in September, particularly in the latter half of the month. If you want to fish a mixed session targeting both catfish and zander, September is when that starts to become a realistic prospect.
October — The Peak October is the month many experienced Ebro guides consider the single best of the calendar. Water temperatures between 16–20°C, catfish feeding aggressively and in numbers, zander at or approaching their best, and conditions on the bank that are simply perfect — warm enough to be comfortable, cool enough to fish all day without suffering.
Catch rates in October are consistently high. Guided groups regularly land 8–15 catfish per day. Zander fishing alongside produces fish to 10lb+. October books up fast.
November — The Wind-Down November is transitional — some years maintain excellent October conditions well into the month, others see water temperatures drop sharply after the first autumn storms. Early November is often very good. By late November the fishing is moving into winter mode — slower, requiring more patience.
Zander fishing in November is outstanding — the best of the autumn run continues into early winter and November often produces the largest zander of the year.
Autumn Catfish Tactics
The method that produces most fish on the Ebro doesn't change much between seasons — pellets over a baited area remains the go-to. But autumn has some specific characteristics worth knowing.
Location: Post-summer catfish spread more widely through the river than winter fish. They're less confined to the deepest water and more likely to be encountered on the inner bends and mid-river features. Your guide will adjust to where fish are holding.
Feeding windows: Unlike summer where early morning and evening are paramount, autumn catfish feed throughout the day. All-day sessions in October can produce takes at any point from first light to dark.
Bait: Pellets remain the primary bait but autumn catfish respond well to larger, oilier options — mackerel and sardine deadbaits become increasingly effective as temperatures drop through October and November.
Take characteristics: Autumn takes tend to be aggressive and fast — fish feeding with summer energy but autumn urgency. Be ready.

Autumn Zander Fishing
Autumn is when the Ebro's zander fishing reaches its peak. Read our dedicated zander fishing guide for full tactics. The short version:
- Blade lures and soft plastics on jigheads produce the most fish in September and October
- Fish are spread through the system and actively hunting — cover water to find them
- November produces the largest specimens on deadbaits and drop-shot rigs
- Double-figure zander are realistic autumn targets on the Caspe stretch
Autumn vs Spring — Which Should You Choose?
Both are excellent. The choice comes down to personal preference:
Choose spring if you want: slightly higher catfish catch rates in peak weeks, the possibility of massive pre-spawn fish, and the Ebro at its most famous peak. Read our spring fishing guide for full detail.
Choose autumn if you want: equally excellent catfish fishing with lower pressure, prime zander season, perfect temperatures, and October's unique magic that keeps experienced anglers coming back for it specifically.
